TEACHING MATHS TO STUDENTS WITH DOWN SYNDROME FROM KS2 TO KS4
This session will explore how the specific learning profile associated with Down syndrome presents specific challenges to progress in Maths and at how schools can play to learning strengths to compensate for those challenges.
This will include:
Working from a secure base: the 9 principles of counting
Tackling the conceptual challenges
Working with concrete resources
Addressing consolidation, inference and transference of skill
Provision planning: intervention vs immersive inclusion
Planning ahead: alternative Maths qualifications at Key Stage 4
As these principles apply at varying stages of progress in numeracy, this session is suitable for staff working at Key Stage 2 to 4.
